The Jacksonville Main Public Library will celebrate its Lewis Ansbacher Map Collection during the Mapping Our Past event.
Charting the Land of Flowers: 500 Years of Florida Maps with Rodney Kite-Powell will present the earliest depiction of Florida on the 1511 Martyr Map to a 21st-century view of Florida from space. This presentation brings together maps from collections around the world, including the Touchton Map Library in the Tamp Bay History Center and Jacksonville Public Library’s Lewis Ansbacher Map Collection, and shows the dramatic changes that have occurred in the Sunshine State over the past 500 years.
Rodney Kite-Powell is the Director of the Touchton Map Library at the Tampa Bay History Center. He received a Bachelor of Arts from the University of Florida and a Master of Arts from the University of South Florida, both in U.S. History. He wrote and lectured on state and local history and is the author of three books including: History of Davis Islands: David P. Davis and the Story of a Landmark Tampa Neighborhood and Tampa Bay’s Waterfront: Its History and Development.
Mapping Our Past is made possible through the generosity of the Lewis and Sybil Ansbacher Family Foundation and the Jordan and Shirley Ansbacher Family Foundation.
