Northeast Florida native Augusta Savage was a famous sculptor. Get your hands in clay to sculpt like her this February for Women's History Month!
Augusta Savage was an African American woman born just outside of Jacksonville, FL. She became one of the most famous African-American female sculptors of all time. This March for Women's History Month we'll talk about Ms. Savage and find out how she overcame difficulties so she could study art and become the first African American artist to be elected to the National Association of Women Painters and Sculptors, a member of the Florida Artist Hall of Fame, and have her sculptures displayed at the Smithsonian American Art Museum in Washington, D.C.
Get ready to get muddy! You'll get your own clay to create your own sculpture and take it home with you.
(Did you know that the library has an ORIGINAL Augusta Savage sculpture? You can see it on the fourth floor of the Main Library downtown along with other pictures and articles and things about Ms. Savage.)
For ages 5 – 12. Program will be limited to the first 20 participants.
Accommodations for persons with disabilities are available upon request. Please ask for the Special Needs Library at 630-2665 or email JPLTBSpecialNeeds@coj.net. This program is free and open to the public.
